Chemistry 11, Unit 2, Lessons 7-10

 Lesson 7-8

  1. Recap from last class: (10 mins)
    - What are significant figures? Why are they important?
    - What is the add/subtract rule for sig figs?
    - How many significant figures does 0.00970 have?

  2. Hand out lesson 4 student notes (2 mins)

  3. Go through Google Slide notes, stopping at the "Let's Practice" sections to have students try the questions for themselves before the answers are revealed (this will likely take a full block)

  4. Give students an assignment for them to practice calculating molar mass and converting between grams and moles. This could be out of the textbook you are using, or one from online (there are many free ones if you Google "molar mass worksheet"). Ideally, the worksheet should start with molar mass calculations, then progress to conversions between grams and moles, followed by multi-step conversions (ex: grams to particles or mg to moles). Make sure students are showing their work and all units appropriately.

  5. I recommend you spend a full block, if not multiple blocks on this lesson as understanding these concepts is essential for what comes next.

Lesson 9-10

  1. Recap from last class: (10 mins)
    - How do you find molar mass of a compound? C6H8?
    - How do you convert between milligrams and atoms?

  2. Hand out lesson 5 student notes (2 mins)

  3. Go through the first part of the Google Slide notes (STP part only), stopping at the "Let's Practice" sections to have students try the questions for themselves before the answers are revealed. Stop at the end of the STP practice (before the concentration slide). (30 mins)

  4. Give students an assignment on STP calculations only. This can be from a textbook or from an online source. Make sure there are no concentration questions as this will confuse them. Make sure students are showing their work and all units appropriately. (30 mins)

  5. Finish the Google slide notes (20 mins)

  6. Give students an assignment on concentration calculations only. Make sure they are showing their work and all units appropriately. (30 mins)

  7. Give students a more complicated assignment that includes all mole conversions (particles, grams, volume at STP, and concentration) (1 hour)
