Lesson 3-4
- Review from last class:
- How do you calculate density?
- If you want to heat something, what kind of glassware should you use?
- How do you read a buret? (draw a measurement on the board or project a photo for them to read) - Hand out conversion factor sheet and lesson 2 student notes (2 mins)
- Go through Google Slide notes, stopping at the "Let's Practice" sections to have students try the questions for themselves before the answers are revealed (30 mins)
- Give students an assignment for them to practice dimensional analysis. This could be out of the textbook you are using, or one from online (there is a plethora of free ones if you Google "dimensional analysis worksheet"). Make sure students are showing their work and all units appropriately. (rest of class)
Supplementary videos:
- Crash Course Chemistry: Unit Conversions (11 min)
- Tyler DeWitt: Converting Units with Conversion Factors (13 mins)
- Tyler DeWitt: Converting Units with Multiple Conversion Factors (10 mins)
Lesson 5-6
- Recap from last class:
- How do you know which units to put in the denominator of a conversion factor?
- What happens if you have to convert multiple units?
- How would you convert 10 m/s to km/h? - Hand out lesson 3 student notes (2 mins)
- Go through Google Slide notes, stopping at the "Let's Practice" sections to have students try the questions for themselves before the answers are revealed (30 mins)
- Give students an assignment for them to practice significant figures. This could be out of the textbook you are using, or one from online (there is a plethora of free ones if you Google "significant figures worksheet"). Make sure students are showing their work and all units appropriately. (rest of class)
Note: "Significant digits" have different rules than significant figures, so stick to worksheets specifically for significant figures.
In my experience, students usually pick up this concept pretty fast, so you can decide if you would like to give more than one assignment on significant figures or not. You could also choose to give students further readings from the textbook on the topics of accuracy and precision.
