Banking & Investment Lesson Plans (Gr11)

These lesson plans are meant to be used in either Career-Life Connections 11, Pre-calculus 11, and/or Foundations of Math 11 (BC Curriculum). They cover the factual side of banking, credit, and investments. I recommend using the Absolute Value Publication workbooks (included in both the foundations and pre-calculus 11 workbooks) along with these lessons as the books cover the mathmatical concepts (calculating simple and compound interest) thoroughly.

Note: these lessons were made based on 80 minute work blocks. I tend to plan my lessons 2 at a time.

Lesson 1-2

  1. Introduce the topic of banking. Ask students: (10 minutes)
      • What do you already know about banking?
      • How does banking work?
      • Do you use a bank? If so, what services do you use? What services do your parents use?
      • Do you think banking is important? Why or why not?
  2. Have students write down key information while they watch the YouTube video Kurzgesagt | money explained - banking and credit and Banking 1 | Money, banking and central banks | Finance & Capital Markets | Khan Academy (20 minutes)
  3. Have a class discussion about what type of questions that video brought up (prompts: different types of banking like credit unions and new investment, recessions (2008), microloans (15 mins)
  4. Hand out lesson 1 student notes (2 mins)
  5. Go through Teacher PPT on banking with the class (30 minutes)
  6. Have students research banks using the comparing banks worksheet to guide them. Students will need access to computers with internet for this. (rest of class + the following class to finish)
  7. Class discussion on their research findings

Lesson 3-4

  1. Recap from last class: (5-10 minutes)
      • What is a bank's primary goal?
      • What is a central bank?
      • How are commercial and online banks different?
      • What should you look for when choosing a bank to use?
  2. Introduce the topic of credit: (5-10 minutes)
      • What do you already know about credit/debt?
      • What types of credit/debt do you know about?
      • Is going into debt always a bad thing?
      • What do you wonder about credit/debt?
  3. Hand out lesson 2 student notes (2 mins)
  4. Go over Teacher PPT with the class (30 minutes)
  5. Have students complete the debt scenario worksheet by using notes and researching online for strategies to reduce/eliminate debt. Make sure to let them know that 'making more money' or 'make bigger payments' are not acceptable answers. (remainder of class time + time in the following block)
  6. Go over the answers to the debt scenario worksheet as a class (20 mins)

Lesson 5-6

  1. Recap from last class: (5-10 minutes)
      • What are 2 pros and 2 cons of using credit cards?
      • What is a credit score? What are 2 things you can do to increase your score?
      • What is the difference between a secured and unsecured loan?
      • Is bankruptcy an easy way to get out of debt?
  2. Introduce the topic of investing: (5-10 mins)
      • What do you already know about investing?
      • What type of investments do you already know about?
      • Should everybody invest the same way?
      • What do you hope to learn about investing?
  3. Hand out lesson 3 student notes (2 mins)
  4. Go through Teacher PPT with the class (30 minutes)
  5. Hand out investment scenario worksheet (2 mins)
  6. Have students complete the worksheet using their notes and/or researching online (remainder of class)
  7. Go over the answers to the worksheet as a class (20 mins)
  8. Play a game: Go to buildyourstax.com and create a group for students to join. Students need to be on a laptop to join and play properly - cell phones don't work very well. This game takes about 30 minutes to play a round, and in my experience is a bit hit with students.

Lesson 7: Review Class

Lesson 8: Assessment

I hope you found these plans useful!
