Teaching the Scientific Method (Freebie Link!)

When I first started out as a teacher, teaching the scientific method felt like a daunting task, but the more I learned about it, the more I realized that it's more simple than you think. We apply the scientific method to situations around us all the time, without realizing it. There has also been a big push for inquiry based learning in schools, and inquiry is basically just a general form of the scientific method.

My first experience teaching the scientific method came when I decided to run a science fair at my school. I assigned all my science students the task of creating a science fair project. We covered the basic sections of a science fair project before they started, but I didn't teach much specific knowledge of components and methods. Not surprisingly, we all struggled. Students had the hardest time coming up with original ideas (many wanted to just redo things they had seen on the internet) and fleshing out the project to the extent needed. With this knowledge, I was able to plan a more in depth unit on the scientific method that I teach along side the science fair projects. I now go through notes and activities around work blocks for science fair projects to give students more structure and reference information. These interactive notes and one activity (freebie) I created are available in my store.
